The best location for music lessons in York
The Music at Heart Studio is situated in beautiful surroundings, in the grounds of York Minster. Approaching from the East, take time to look up at the great East Window, the grandeur of the Minster's architecture and the intricacies of the stone carvings, testimony to the skills of master craftsmen, past and present. Approaching from the West, enjoy the changing scenery of the Dean's Park - the vibrant colours of autumn, the joyous blossom in spring, the peaceful tranquility of early morning, the hustle and bustle of afternoon visitors.
Suzuki stressed the importance of a person's experience of beauty in the formation of character: "It is our greatest privilege as human beings that we have hearts and can see the beautiful and high things in life." He also implored parents to "enjoy the moment" with their children, rather than forever rushing around from one activity to the next.
The music studio, famed for its 17th century plaster ceiling populated by flying birds and Yorkshire roses, has enough room to enable dance and movement whilst maintaining an intimacy where children feel safe and at home. It houses my vast collection of recorders, together with a piano and virginals and a music trolley over-flowing with percussion instruments.
The musical resources are complemented by a vast array of multi-sensory teaching aids, used with thought to serve your child's musical and personal development, not simply to entertain: puppets, scarves, streamers, balls, hoops, parachute, co-operative band etc.
Beautiful tone, beautiful heart
All the instruments are of the highest quality, chosen for their warm resonance and accurate intonation. Your child will be taught how to handle the instruments with care and respect, and to play them correctly: the drum is not bashed haphazardly with a stiff, hard hand; the xylophone is not hit randomly with excessive energy; the shakers are not dropped into a bag, but put away neatly in the holes of an egg box. Suzuki’s maxim, “Beautiful tone, beautiful heart” reveals a profound truth: how we are as musicians is how we are as people.
Arriving by car, free parking is available right outside the studio.
Arriving on foot, the spacious hallway provides plenty of parking space for buggies (single and double), and a designated area for hanging coats and storing shoes neatly: Suzuki believed that if children are taught to show respect for the little things in life, by encouraging them to look after their belongings and be neat and tidy, they will develop generous hearts and learn to be kind and respectful of others and their needs. The large cloakroom area, with facilities for washing and nappy-changing, will accommodate a wheelchair easily.
Relax, share, enjoy
Adjoining the music studio is a light and airy kitchen, with tea and coffee, juice and biscuits in abundance. This provides a warm and welcoming pre-class meeting space for the Early Years families to share, chat and relax, with a treasure-chest of instruments and sound-makers for the children to explore. It also serves as a very comfortable waiting / working / reading / knitting / snoozing area for parents who wish to stay during after-school recorder group lessons. In the warmer months, a walled garden to the rear of the studio becomes an equally attractive gathering-place.
